Lydia has become a widow at the age of 76. Now her son, Luke, has explained to her that there are financial issues in her future. Her home and her lifestyle are in jeopardy. He has suggested she find a lodger to help with the cost and upkeep of her historic home. He must return to New York where his job and his pregnant wife await him.Luke helps Lydia find Erin. She is a 26 year old young woman who has discovered that her fiancee and her best friend are having an affair. She has lost the two closest people in her life, her job and her place to live.Lydia and Erin are a match made in heaven.Because both of these women have had huge losses in their lives, they soon learn that they are facing some of the same emotional hurdles.Lydia has an attic filled with antiques which must be sold in order to help her finances. There should be enough money to pay off all the debts. She drafts Erin into helping sort through things and as they do, Erin learns about antiques. The two of them form a team to travel to antique fairs and sales with their wares. Lydia teaches a great deal to Erin. One of the most important things she teaches about selling is to include a good story of explanation with each item to be sold.In life, Lydia and Erin teach one another about facing the future with an open heart. They both have things to overcome, but with their shared friendship they are able to meet things with strength.This is a wonderful book.There are sorrows which seem overwhelming but which must be faced. There is a great deal of humor. And most of all there is a growing love and friendship.Erin brings Lydia into the technology age. Ideas and items which were never a part of her life become necessities. And a lady can always use a new more modern wardrobe.Lydia presents Erin with ideas about the possibilities in life. After having her self esteem damaged, she is encouraged to recognize her capabilities, talents and her goodness.Lydia must deal with a failing memory and mood swings which come out of the blue. She feels uneasy at first and then becomes frightened. Her situation is handled well by the author. There are explanations which answer many questions about Alzheimer's disease.This story has wonderfully well rounded characters. Lydia, Erin and all the secondary characters behave like real people behave. Some are good, some are not so good but all of them are interesting.The plot moves quickly. There are no down spots. The perspective changes between Erin and Lydia. It is seamless and shows two different views of the same events.I have enjoyed this book very much. It is about powerful relationships. And it illustrates that even after devastating loss, life can go on and become a new adventurous chapter in the story.Most of all it illustrates that at times what we need most in life is a friend who will love us no matter what.I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.
There may be a 50 year age difference between Lydia and Erin but they become fast friends in this heartfelt novel. Both are at loose and scary ends- Lydia's just found out that her dead husband left her with huge debt and zip resources and Erin's fiance cheated on her with her BFF. Erin rents a room from Lydia, an arrangement neither of them could have envisioned but it turns out to be for the best. Both have something to teach the other, whether it's how to use a smartphone or about life in general. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. This is a tad slow in spots but it's a pleasant read.
A wonderful read. I was captivated From the first chapter. It's very well written as the author adeptly captures the younger generation as well as the older generation. Two women who have recently had the rug pulled out from underneath them, find themselves sharing a house and a lot more. Lydia and Erin bond and form a true friendship that endures. I loved the pluckiness of both characters and the realizations both discover through their friendship. The book has a great theme and is a great read. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy.
